  Haiku Chronicles NEWSLETTER              Fall 2010

What's New

As the spring and summer come to a close, we hope all of you enjoyed the warmth of the seasons.  Fall is back to school time and many of you may recall one of the first writing assignments when returning to school would be, "What did you do this summer?"

Well, here's what we did here at Haiku Chronicles during our very busy spring and summer ...

In the Spring, Al and I traveled to Denver, CO and made our way to Santa Fe, NM where we gave a talk on haiku and related forms at my alma mater, the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).  Check out our photo albums on the Haiku Chronicles Facebook page.  We did manage to get out a few episodes during the Summer: Episode 13, "Tanka Part I - Tangled Hair" with guests Hiroaki Sato, Yuko Otomo and Steve Dalachinsky; and  Episode 14, "Buson's Two Candles," Part II of our special series on The Four Pillars with Anita Virgil.   If you have not had a chance to listen to the episodes, do take the time to tune in on some great discussions.

In July, Kris Kondo Moon was visiting the states from Japan, and we all rode together to a Renku Party in Margate, NJ.  We joined fellow poets, Henry Brann, Robin Palley, and Penny Harter to write poetry under the summer's full moon known as the "Thunder Moon."  A renku episode materialized from this event and is now on-line!

Haiku Chronicles Episode 15:  Thunder Moon: A Renku Party

An invaluable guide to renku composition with renku master, Kris Moon Kondo and guest poets Henry Brann, Robin Palley, and Penny Harter.

You will notice the Haiku Chronicles Website has a new look!  Another thing we did this summer.  The podcast has grown and with it the website had to grow too.  We wanted to improve how we archive past episodes; create a blog format to enable us to feature additional posts beyond new episode postings; and a new subscription feature.  So check out the new website at: http://haikuchronicles.com/

Alan Pizzarelli's book of new and selected poems, "Frozen Socks," will be available on Kindle Books and other eReaders by early December. The book will also be available in print, published by our newly established independent press, "House of Haiku," stay tuned for announcement on its release.

We had hoped to have a Halloween episode in time for this week's festivities.  But we could only handle one Halloween release at a time.  What am I speaking of?  Well, it's the last thing we did this summer ... preparation for the release of our new Halloween music CD titled, "Voices from the Grave," by Boneyard, Ghoul of the Blues, produced by Donna Beaver and includes three original songs written by Alan Pizzarelli.  Many of you know that Al has a unique gift of writing senryu "parodies" well, he's done it again for this album with "You Put a Spell on Me" (a parody, of 'I put a Spell on You' with new words by songwriter/poet, Alan Pizzarelli).  You can listen to a preview of the songs at Bonyard's website at:  www.boneyardmusic.com  and enjoy!

So, with that ... Happy Halloween from Haiku Chronicles!

Your Hosts,

Donna Beaver & Al Pizzarelli

Bloomfield, NJ
