Berry Blue Haiku
is a quarterly digital magazine focusing on haiku and related forms for kids of all ages.

We are in current need of material (especially nonfiction) for our December 2010 and March 2011 issues.

**Please note that we feature haiku reflecting all seasons in each issue.

We are open to all types of haiku: nature with a seasonal word (kigo), modern, human haiku (often called senryu), fun haiku, as well as haiga and haibun.

Nonfiction Articles:

Berry Blue Haiku features articles on haiku and related forms such as haiga, and haibun; topics may include (but are not limited to) ideas for the classroom, how-to articles, historical articles and/or current-practice articles on the forms, and biographical articles on haiku masters such as Basho, Chiyo-ni, Issa, Shiki, Buson, etc.

Please remember to include the age range (or grade level if you intend your article for classroom use) of your targeted audience.

Other things we'd like to see:

• Haiku/haiga/haibun lessons/exercises that could be used in classrooms or at home.
• Advice and tips on writing haiku or other related forms.
• Crafts incorporating haiku, such as bookmarks, gift tags, postcards, etc. Please include photos if possible.
• Haiku projects for gift ideas.

Submission Requirements

• Send either up to five haiku/senryu poems, three haibun, one haiga or one nonfiction article/idea per submission, pasted in the body of your email. **Please note that for articles or lessons over 250 words, please query first. See below for information about query submissions.
• Format your subject title with either Haiku/Senryu (haiku is fine for either), Haiga, Haibun or Craft Submission and if it is season-themed. ex: Haiku Submission—Winter Themed. If your haiku are for different seasons, simply put Miscellaneous Haiku Submission in the subject title. Please keep all haiku in ONE email.
• Please indicate in your cover letter if your submission is simultaneous, and notify us immediately if another publication accepts it.
• Please specify the age level of nonfiction material.
Send only unpublished material. No reprints please.
• No multiple submissions. We ask that you wait for a response before submitting to us again.
• First time contributors, please include a brief third-person bio. Previous contributors only need to include a bio if they wish to have it updated.

• Please paste your query into the body of your email.
• Your subject line should include the words, "NONFICTION QUERY", as well as the title of your tentative project.
• Please send only one query per email.

Nonfiction Submissions Length

Children up to 6: 150 - 250 words
Ages 7 -10: 250 to 500 words
Ages 11 -13: 500 to 1000 words

Response times

We do our best to respond to all submissions within two weeks. Response time will be longer on submissions under consideration.

Rates

Nonfiction up to 500 words: $5.00 US
Nonfiction over 500 words: $10.00 US
Haiga: $5.00 US
Haibun: $3.00 US 
**Haiku: each fifth haiku $10.00

All contributors will also receive free access to the issue in which their work appears.

**In lieu of choosing favorites each issue, and since they all qualify as our favorites, we would like to begin paying a small honorarium to our regular contributors. Beginning with our December issue, each time a writer reaches  a total of five published haiku/senryu in Berry Blue Haiku, he or she will receive a payment of $10.00US. This is our way of thanking you for continuing to send us your finest children's haiku.    


Payments are sent at publication as either cash, payable through PayPal (please note that PayPal fees apply), or an emailed gift certificate from Amazon.com (please note that there is a minimum of $5.00 required for Amazon gift certificates). PayPal payments can also be sent in equivalent Canadian funds.

Terms

Berry Blue Haiku requests First Serial Rights and Non-Exclusive Worldwide Electronic Rights for one year from publication date. All other rights revert back to the author following online publication.
